Dr. Ryōjun Matsumoto (松本良順, Matsumoto Ryoujun) is a friend of Koudou Yukimura and a reliable doctor of the Shogunate. He has helped the Shinsengumi on several occasions, giving information or providing medical assistance. He is also the one who diagnoses Okita with tuberculosis.
His character is based on the historical Japanese physician Matsumoto Ryōjun.
Appearance
Dr. Ryōjun Matsumoto is a bald, tall and bulky middle-aged man similar in appearance to Koudou Yukimura. He wears a blue kimono with dark bottoms and a white collar, and traditional Japanese sandals.
Personality
Dr. Matsumoto is a kind and caring man which befits the doctor image. Despite being nice and softspoken, he is also serious and firm, making sure his patients get the necessary treatment regardless of their own wishes. He is trusted by the Shinsengumi commanders even with the most difficult cases such as Okita's wounds and disease, and he is also trustworthy enough to know about the Ochimizu research.
Skills and Abilities
Matsumoto-sensei is a skilled physician with a wide range of medical skills, however, his knowledge in western medicine is limited.
Plot

Matsumoto in Ginsei no Shou
Ryōjun Matsumoto is a doctor a friend of Koudou Yukimura, which prompts Chizuru to visit him when letters from her father stop coming. However, he only makes a personal appearance later in the story as he is tasked with checking the Shinsengumi members' health only to discover that a lot of them have injuries or illnesses. It is when he diagnoses Okita with tuberculosis, even though does not reveal the disease to the other Shinsengumi members. In the Shinsengumi headquarters he meets Chizuru and shares what he knows about her father which is not much but involves his participance in the Rasetsu experiments.
In the games, Matsumoto takes it upon himself to find the cure for the Rasetsu, however, manages to create only the powder that suppresses bloodlust. Following Okita's game route, it is revealed that he has taken care of Okita and his tuberculosis to the utmost of his abilities after Okita was sent to Osaka for treatment.
