Hakuōki ~Shinsengumi Kitan~ (薄桜鬼 〜新選組奇譚〜, Demon of the Fleeting Blossom: Tales of the Shinsengumi) is a video game series by Idea Factory, first designed for PlayStation 2 and then later ported to PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo 3DS, from 2008 up to 2024. Two of the games have been published in English by Aksys Games. The otome game series has been adapted into an anime series and animated by Studio DEEN. The first season, Hakuōki: Shinsengumi Kitan, began airing in Japan on the TV Kanagawa and UHF stations on April 4, 2010. The second season, Hakuōki: Hekketsuroku, began airing on October 10, 2010 and ended on December 12, 2010. The story has also been adapted as two different book series. The third season, based on the prequel, Hakuōki: Reimeiroku, aired in the summer of 2012. Two animation films were released in 2013, but were just shortened up versions of the anime. See more about the differences between the original anime and the shortened movies here. The anime series has been licensed by Sentai Filmworks in North America.

The names "Hakuōki" and "Hakuouki: Shinsengumi Kitan" are both valid names for the series. Hakuōki is officially translated into "Demon of the Fleeting Blossom" with Shinsengumi Kitan translating into "Tales of the Shinsengumi", making the full name translate into "Demon of the Fleeting Blossom: Tales of the Shinsengumi". There is sometimes a red seal printed near the title that says "新選組奇譚" which reads as "Shinsengumi Kitan". This shows that the two different titles are both valid.

"Hakuōki" is the official spelling, but many people use the spelling "Hakuouki" when the use of the accent mark is not available. The "u" in Hakuouki can substitute the accent mark, thus extending the vowel that is needed. There is no difference in pronunciation. The version "Hakuoki" is also used in many adaptations, however, is not phonetically correct. Read more on our Localization Policy page.

She learns that her father collaborated with the Shinsengumi before his clinic burned down. Believing he is still alive, they offer to help her search for him. To hide her identity, Chizuru wears a male kimono and becomes a valuable ally to the samurai. Additionally, she is revealed to be a demon from the Yukimura clan, initially unaware of her heritage.
Unlike the historical Shinsengumi members, she is a fictional character. In the anime, her romantic path is predetermined, while in the games, players can choose various routes.
