Hakuōki ~Shinsengumi Kitan~ (薄桜鬼 〜新選組奇譚〜) is a video game series by Idea Factory, first designed for PlayStation 2 and then later ported to PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo 3DS. The series has been adapted into an anime series animated by Studio DEEN and consists of three seasons, two movies and three OVA mini-series. Additionally, the series has two live-action adaptations and a musical. In 2016 the game series was re-made and released on consoles, with a Steam release in 2017-2018.

Synopsis
Chizuru Yukimura has gone to Kyoto in search for her father. As she walks through the town at night, she gets chased by a group of rogue samurai from whom she hides in an alleyway, but two white-haired non-human creatures attack and brutally kill the rogues, shifting their attention to Chizuru. As she prepares herself for the inevitable, she is suddenly rescued by brave and skilled swordsmen wearing blue haori. As it turns out, they happen to be members of the Shinsengumi - the Kyoto police unit - who are also searching for Chizuru's father.
Chizuru joins the Shinsengumi to assist with the search while staying in their headquarters helping with chores. She learns about the samurai's honor and resolve, and a bond slowly forms between the captains of the Shinsengumi and Chizuru. Throughout the series they fight multiple battles caused by political conflicts, betrayals of their allies, and mysterious individuals who call themselves oni.
Eventually, Chizuru finds out about her father's darkest secrets which include her own tragic past...
