Hakuōki OVA (2021) (薄桜鬼 OVA, Demon of the Fleeting Blossom OVA) is the continuation of the story about the Shinsengumi that dives into more unknown details about the famous events.
The storyline unfolds as a continuation of Season 3 Hakuōki: Reimeiroku. It revolves around a group of rōnin, backed by the Tosa Domain, plotting to assassinate the shōgun and discredit the Shinsengumi. Kaoru Nagumo, Chizuru's twin brother, plays a pivotal role by assuming her identity in their nefarious scheme. During these events, Chizuru finds protection from the Shinsengumi treasurer, Sakai, who sustains injuries. Subsequently, due to a fateful encounter with Ochimizu, Sakai undergoes a transformation into a Rasetsu.
The staff from the previous series return to produce the episodes.

Plot
The OVA sheds the light on the events that happened with the characters of the Hakuōki franchise shortly after their move to the Nishi Hongan-ji Temple. Thanks to the fight at Ikeda-ya and the events at the Hamaguri Gate, the name Shinsengumi spread everywhere, and on the wave of this success they were entrusted with guarding the shōgun during his visit to Kyoto. However, a day before his arrival in the city, rōnins, calling themselves the Shinsengumi, started robbing merchants. The commanders, led by Hijikata, strive to find the impostors.
