Hijikata Toshizou
Right after the battle between Hijikata and Kazama, Hijikata and Chizuru walk back to Goryoukaku as Hijikata is sure that Ootori and Enomoto are going to surrender to save their subordinates, which means the chief of the Shinsengumi has to do it, too. On their way, they encounter Souma, who informs them that the battle has been lost. Souma argues that if Hijikata surrenders, it will almost certainly cost him his life. To protect him, Souma volunteers to claim that Hijikata has died, leaving him as the new chief of the Shinsengumi. Seeing Souma's determination, Hijikata reluctantly agrees to pass the burden onto him.
Chizuru and Hijikata decide to settle down in the mountains near Hakodate and live in hiding after the war is over. In a bit over 3 years, Chizuru meets a mysterious woman in the city who gives her a letter and disappears in the crowd. The letter turns out to be from Sen. As Chizuru rushes back home, Hijikata greets her with annoyance and worry because it took her longer than usual and calls her his wife. As the contents of the letter are revealed, Hijikata finds out that those who surrendered to the new government got a severe punishment but have now been pardoned along with all the war participants, which means Hijikata is no longer wanted, either. Additionally, Shimada, Nagakura and Saitou are said to be still alive. Hijikata and Chizuru share a kiss and promise to stay together "until death do us part".
Okita Souji
Chizuru and Souji have lived a secluded life in the mountains for 4 years after the deaths of Koudou and Kaoru. Chizuru is always the one who goes shopping because Souji is a former Shinsengumi Captain and he is wanted by the new government. Souji's illness has not been fully cured but he is able to walk in the sun and he does not have blood urges. Only after all these years have they finally learnt of Hijikata's fate and about the fact that the Shinsengumi and all who participated in the war have been pardoned. Souji keeps repeating that he will soon follow his fallen comrades, asking Chizuru if she is ready to witness it at any moment, but Chizuru believes that the modern era might bring a cure for his tuberculosis.
Kazama Chikage
5 years after the end of the Shinsengumi, Chizuru is Chikage's wife living in the Kazama Clan. Chikage involves her in political discussions and calls her "the chief's wife", they share a deep and intimate bond. According to Chizuru, they have children, even though their age or appearance is not mentioned or shown. Chikage's personality has not changed, he is still a powerful leader who knows his worth and is not afraid to take responsibility. Learning that the Satsuma Domain might rebel against the new law that prohibits wielding a sword, Chikage promises not to get involved and decides to look for another place for his Clan to hide, promising to protect Chizuru, their children and all the demons in the Kazama clan. Chizuru promises to stay by his side.

Sannan joins her on a journey to Europe in order to find a way to turn Rasetsu back into humans. Three years later, they are still in Europe, more specifically in France, where they found a legend about similar creatures: vampires. Sannan is still a Rasetsu, they travel in darker times of the day, and he drinks special water to slower down the Rasetsu corruption. Chizuru tries to learn the language and read newspapers. From one of the newspapers they learn that the Shinsengumi have been pardoned and are no longer prosecuted as traitors. Sannan realizes that he drank Ochimizu to be able to wield a sword again and now swords are soon to be banned in Japan, but he does not regret his choice because it allowed him to be with Chizuru, and they both hope to find a cure.
Yamazaki Susumu
After leaving the Shinsengumi Yamazaki never regretted choosing to help people instead of living in the Shinsengumi's shadow and dying for their cause. 3 years after the war is over, Chizuru and Susumu live a quiet life at the Yukimura Clinic in Edo, supported by Dr. Matsumoto. They study western medicine and foreign languages along with it to understand the books that come from Germany and other European contries. One of the patients says that Yamazaki used to have a sharp look in his eyes but with time he has become a lot friendlier, and Chizuru admits that he sometimes practices smiling in front of a mirror. The old lady also points out that the two look very happy together. While Susumu is slightly pessimistic about his life span due to being a Rasetsu, Chizuru is sure that they can find a cure. Learning that the Shinsengumi have been pardoned, Chizuru offers to rename the clinic into Yamazaki since it is their surname now as a married couple.

One day, they receive a letter from Sen that informs them of the amnesty for all those who fought for the Bakufu. Hachirou reveals to Chizuru that right before they escaped Enomoto entrusted him with hidden funds to help former allies in case of need, so now that the old Bakufu army has been pardoned Hachirou intends to go back to Kyoto and Edo in order to help his former comrades. Before doing so, he places a wedding veil on top of Chizuru's head and proposes to her. She cries from happiness and agrees, asking to join him on his new adventure as his wife.
