Historical counterpart

Hyōgo Sakai (酒井 兵庫, year of birth unknown - around July 1865) was a member of the Shinsengumi, a group of samurai warriors during the late Edo period in Japan.

Originally from Settsu Province, specifically from the town of Sumiyoshi, he joined the Shinsengumi and served as an accountant (known as "kaikei-gata"). He actively participated in the Ikedaya Incident and was rewarded with a commendation of 15 ryō for his actions. In the "Shinsengumi Kōgun Roku", a record of the Shinsengumi's military activities, his name appears alongside those of Harada Sanosuke and Yamanami Keisuke.

However, around the time of the first year of the Keio era (1865), he made a daring escape from the Shinsengumi. The reasons for his escape remain unclear, as there are various speculations. One theory suggests that he became terrified while involved in the grim task of burying bodies and decided to flee. Some accounts even claim that he was later assassinated by members of the Shinsengumi, including Okita Sōji. His name is inscribed on a tombstone in Itabashi.
