Isami Kondō (近藤 勇, Kondou Isami) is the founder and principal of the Hakuou Academy, who is also in charge of the Kendo Club.
Appearance
Kondou is a middle-aged man with shoulder-length black hair that he keeps tied up. As the school principal, he wears an official gray suit with a white shirt underneath and a pink tie.
Personality
Kondou's generous and easy-going personality makes students like him. However, despite having high moral standards and ideals, he is not good at running a school, so he often relies on his colleagues' help.

The founder, head principal, and Kendo coach of Hakuou Academy. He has an easygoing personality and is kind, thoughtful, and very passionate about the well-being of his students. However, he seems to have a bad habit of training in the halls. Kondou is not very good at management which is why he relies on Hijikata and Sannan. He lives in a deserted dojo as his home.
Anime OVA
In the short OVA, Kondou makes a very brief appearance and is only seen scolded by Hijikata for practicing with a wooden sword in the school hallway and later making a small announcement.
Live Action TV series

Kondou-san is portrayed unusually serious, which detaches him from other characters who create comedic chaos. He appears in Episode 1 bringing tea to Hijikata-sensei and reminding him to take rest. Leaving, Kondou-san asks how Chizuru is doing and whether Hijikata-sensei regrets admitting her to the academy. Before Hijikata-sensei has time to reply, Nagakura-sensei runs into the room screaming, and Kondou-san threatens to teach him a lesson. Later in the story, Kondou-san is mentioned by various characters a few times, whether they remember his words or threaten to report someone to him. As revealed in Episode 3, Kondou-san has been looking after Souji ever since he was little and trained him and other students to use a sword. It is also mentioned and shown throughout the series that Kondou-san heavily relies on Hijikata-sensei.
